With flourishing ecosystems and huge concentrations of wildlife, Tanzania’s Northern Circuit offers a Big Five African safari adventure like no other.

Tanzania is profoundly beautiful and remarkably unspoilt: almost a third of the country is protected, with 14 national parks preserving a range of ecosystems that support almost an astonishing concentration and diversity of game. Home to almost a fifth of Africa’s large mammals – from elephant and hippo to lion, wildebeest, zebra and more – it is easy to understand why safari is a way of life in beautiful Tanzania.

Tune into the spirit of Tanzania at Arusha Coffee Lodge, where you can catch your breath after your flight. The next morning, experience a part of Africa untamed by time in Tarangire National Park, the sixth-largest national park in Tanzania. This untouched paradise – particularly famous for its massive baobab trees, enormous elephant herds and tree-climbing lions – offers a superb, authentic safari in a remote, uncrowded wilderness. Next up is iconic Ngorongoro Crater, the floor of which supports an astonishing concentration of wildlife, including 25 000 large mammals. Round off your Tanzania safari with the unmissable Serengeti plains, a vast grassland savannah that plays host to the astounding Great Migration, with thrilling predator action as over a million wildebeest and thousands of zebra search out seasonal grazing in an age-old cycle – a profound and life-changing spectacle.

Itinerary in detail

Image of Arusha Coffee Lodge, Arusha

This beautiful lodge tucked away among the coffee plantations that cover the gently rolling foothills of Mount Meru is the perfect place to settle into African time ahead of your upcoming big-game safari. Designed around the original homestead that dates from the early 20th century, the 30 plantation houses scattered through the lush garden are spacious and inviting retreats among the coffee trees.

Image of Tarangire Treetops, Tarangire National Park

In a magical setting in a private reserve bordering Tarangire National Park, Tarangire Treetops is an airy delight. The 20 spacious, beautifully crafted treehouse suites are elevated above the ground, with an open-fronted design and expansive private decks that give you spectacular views over the tops of the marula and baobab trees all the way to the Tarangire plains. The lodge is well situated to get you into Tarangire at first light for an exhilarating game drive in open 4x4 safari vehicles.

Image of Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp, Ngorongoro Crater

Ideally located in an ancient acacia forest on the rim of the crater under 5 minutes from the quiet Lemala access route, Lemala Ngorongoro is a luxurious, authentic and intimate camp that gives you first-light access into the Ngorongoro Crater and a good hour’s headstart over other visitors – ideal for serious wildlife photographers and seasoned safari-goers. Its views of the cliffs plunging down into Africa’s Eden below have to be seen to be believed.

The game-rich Seronera Valley in Central Serengeti is an essential safari destination. An abundance of water means that this part of the Serengeti is famous for the quality of its year-round game viewing and large population of big cats. But from April to June and November to January, these plains thrum with the beat of a million hooves as the annual wildebeest migration passes through, bringing with it the biggest wildlife spectacle on the planet as the big cats spring into action.
