Set in mopane woodland on the shores of the lake, Changa Safari Camp is a place of secluded luxury – guests have nearly four kilometres of stunning shoreline to themselves.
Changa has been designed to harmonise with its natural surroundings without stinting on style and luxurious comfort. Each of the six double or twin tents and two family tents has its own deck and hammock overlooking the lake, with the Matuzviadonha Mountains beyond. Guests can turn on small sprinklers in the trees in front of their tents and enjoy the birdlife attracted to the cooling spray. The family tents are in fact two interconnected tents. The interiors of the classic sand-coloured canvas tents have been individually decorated in East African style. Well-equipped bathrooms are complemented by the appealingly organic lines of outdoor showers and baths constructed of pale concrete inset with handmade tiles. No true romantic can miss a candlelit bath overlooking the lake as elephant congregate on the shores at sunset.
The inviting main guest area has an open-air lounge, a dining area, a bar built around an old boat hull, library, infinity pool and deck located along a sandy beach. Changa Safari Camp prides itself on its gourmet meals. Breakfast and lunch are served al fresco while candlelit dinners are enjoyed in the dining area or on the beach. Early morning tea or coffee is delivered to the tents.
Changa has supported the Matusadona Lion Project since its inception in 2014, and guests can learn about this study of the park’s lion population and conservation in Zimbabwe from the project team. Guided game drives allow guests to take in the amazing views while spotting lion and buffalo, elephant and zebra, giraffe and antelope from the comfort of customized safari vehicles. Visitors can explore the walker’s paradise of Matusadona on foot in the early morning or evening, tracking elephants, observing herds of buffalo or learning about the uses of various plants from one of the camp’s professional and highly knowledgeable guides.
Lake Kariba is excellent fishing territory – guided fishing trips yield tilapia, bream, vundu, catfish and, of course, the famous tiger fish. The camp chef can present successful anglers with their catch transformed into a delectable dish. Sundowner cruises and cruises along the Sanyati Gorge are a more leisurely opportunity to marvel at hippos, crocodiles and water birds while, closer to home, an afternoon on the suspended day bed alongside the pool beckons. After all, the camp is surrounded by an ever-changing parade of African mammals and birds.
