Open from June 2018, Shipwreck Lodge is located within the Skeleton Coast Central Concession between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers, which are both magnets for wildlife in this place of sand. These rivers are mostly dry but every few years, when the rains to the east are plentiful, they flow and slice through the towering dunes, forcing their desperate way to the sea and carving surreal sand cliffs in the process.
Ten light and modern twin rooms and two family rooms with outside decks sit among the dunes, with stunning views of the Atlantic and the distant mountains of the Kaokoland. You can enjoy the Namibian sun at the pool or, when the infamous Skeleton Coast sea mist creeps in, you can relax in the sun lounge.
Shipwreck Lodge offers several exciting activities for guests to enjoy. Experience the true magnitude of this sandscape with an exhilarating 4×4 drive over towering dunes or head to Mӧwe Bay Seal Colony, passing shipwrecks and old diamond mines on the way. Elephant and lion and a host of smaller animal sightings, like springbok and brown hyena, are also possible on daily game drives. This is also the perfect location for the fishing enthusiast. For those who are interested in the cultural aspects of the region, a visit to a Himba village will be a rewarding experience. From the comfort and luxury of Shipwreck Lodge, you will watch the changing moods of the day – from the sea-gift of ghostly fog to the searing heat of the afternoon. Your time spent here will be about solitude and true wilderness in a world where that is seldom possible.
