The essence of Namibia is the singular sense of space it gives you. The feeling you get from being in an utterly unspoilt expanse with pristine desertscapes in every direction is simply extraordinary. By night, an endless canopy of southern hemisphere stars fills the sky – an exceptional sight. This is the joy of Wolwedans.
Boulders Safari Camp is sensitively designed to have a very light environmental footprint on the pristine desert ecology in which it is situated. The NamibRand Nature Reserve is a vast private reserve covering almost 200 000 hectares bordering the Namib Naukluft Park, south of Sossusvlei in southwestern Namibia. A strict code of ethics assures that this wilderness paradise accommodates only a limited number of guests at a time – a ratio of just one bed to 1 000 hectares of nature. This means that as a guest at Wolwedans you have about two million square metres of wilderness to yourself… a luxury of space makes the reserve a pristine destination. Added to this, the reserve is acknowledged as an International Dark Sky Reserve, a well-deserved honour that is a result of its location in the oldest desert on the planet in one of the most remote areas on Earth, as well as the reserve’s dedicated preservation and conservation efforts.
The tiny but lovely Boulders Camp is the perfect base from which to explore vast stretches of this pristine environment, where you will encounter small and large desert-adapted fauna and flora, and fascinating geology. In classic safari style, Boulders is constructed on elevated wooden decks using roll-up canvas walls and poles. The four beautifully appointed tented suites are carefully sited to maximise privacy. Inside, expect old-world charm and creature comforts: crisp white cotton bed linen, inviting down duvets to ward off the desert chill during the night, and solar-heated hot showers. Each tent has a living-cum-bedroom, en-suite bathroom and a private veranda with sunbeds where you can relax in tranquil peace.
The main area includes an inviting lounge and dining tent complete with good books, wifi and an open fireplace, a breakfast deck and a small and refreshing swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. Candlelit dinners are a treat marked by elegant table settings and lavish but unpretentious bush cuisine featuring homegrown organic fresh produce paired with delicious local and South African wines. Warmth and personalised service are hallmarks of Boulders’ team, who will arrange sundowner cocktails on the mountainous rock plateau with its epic and vast views. The team and resident field guides will weave together a magical desert experience for you, including twice-daily game-viewing drives, walking safaris, hot-air balloon rides and picnics in the wild.
