Tortilis Camp is widely regarded as the very best safari camp in Amboseli for views of iconic Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. Situated on the southwestern edge of Amboseli National Park, facing the mountain and accessed from within the park, Tortilis overlooks its own private 30 000-acre wildlife conservancy, Kitirua. Away from the busy eastern side of Amboseli, and with its own private conservancy, at Tortilis you experience a wild and private Amboseli.
This is a place where eco credentials meet luxury, and every element is designed for a minimal footprint. Built from local materials according to the strictest environmental policies, Tortilis Camp is a prime example of responsibility meeting the highest levels of comfort and luxury.
Tortilis is thoughtfully designed to maximise its spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, and each of the 16 spacious safari tents has glorious views of Kenya’s iconic snow-covered peak. The elegant makuti-thatched safari tents – each with a double or twin bed and an elegant en-suite bathroom – are utterly inviting, with spacious private verandas where you can relax and soak up your beautiful unspoilt surroundings. The Family Tent includes both a double en-suite and a twin en-suite bedroom, and a large private veranda. It shares a swimming pool with the Private House, which consists of an en-suite double bedroom plus an en-suite triple bedroom, and a spacious sitting-cum-dining room with veranda.
The excellent chefs produce everything from fresh homemade pastas and breads to delicious fresh salads and vegetables from Tortilis’s own home garden. Lavish meals are served at individual tables in the spacious dining room overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro as well as out in the bush during game drives, and the daily table d’hôte menu can be tailored to suit your needs. Canapés are served in the bar and lounge before dinner. Communal spaces also include the bar and main lounge.
The safari experience at Tortilis is superb. Game drives, bush walks, sundowners and bush meals all take place both inside Amboseli National Park and within the 30 000-acre private game concession, offering fantastic opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. As well as plentiful plains game and their predators, the area hosts its own eastern white-bearded wildebeest migration, a population that is genetically separate from the Masai Mara/Serengeti population. Amboseli is also famous for its elephant herds, which have been documented by world-renowned researcher Cynthia Moss. Tortilis Camp guides know their backyard intimately and are Gold, Silver or Bronze level Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certified. The Maasai walking guides are local to the area, and have been walking in this wilderness since they were very young. A leader in conservation, Tortilis Camp works with the African Conservation Centre on maintaining elephant exclosures and preserving the Kitirua conservancy, and is a leader in Amboseli for social responsibility.
