Vumbura is designed to minimalist principles but with an eye to maximum comfort and luxury. Streamlined design is warmed by the use of warm, tactile, natural materials and a pleasingly neutral colour palette that blends effortlessly into its location tucked under a canopy of trees fringing the grassy Delta channels and plains.
At Vumbura Plains, lofty spaces and outsized suites soar up to the high thatched ceilings that allow air to circulate freely. Each open-plan suite is raised into the canopy by wooden decks, which also connect the rooms as they thread through the leafy trees, offering superb views of the unfenced wilderness around you. Step down into the spacious sunken lounge area, open via floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels on three sides for that iconic view of the Okavango floodplains. The massive bed is set on a raised platform under billowing mosquito nets. A writing desk with plug points, ample storage space, minibar fridge, tea- and coffee-making facilities and twirling ceiling fan all add to your comfort. In addition to the large en-suite bathroom area is a second outdoor shower where you can shower under the open sky. A separate flushing toilet, twin basins and a vanity unit are complemented by a good selection of toiletries. In the heat of the day relax in a sunlounger on the deck, dip into your private plunge pool or on the sofa in your sala, where you can take in the passing parade of wildlife or indulge in a soothing in-room massage.
Once you’re ready for communal life, head to the sumptuous raised lounge, bar and dining area with truly magnificent views across the Okavango Delta, or sink into a cushion on the viewing deck that protrudes into the floodplain to look out for passing elephant, enjoy the convivial campfire or simply soak up the glory of the night sky.
Service and food at Vumbura Plains are both of the highest order. Meals are taken either communally or at individual tables – the choice is yours. At night, meals are delicious plated three-course affairs, while daytime meals include a lavish afternoon tea. Monday nights will usually find the guests feasting on a traditional buffet under the night sky in a lantern-lit clearing to the background ‘music’ of wild nocturnal creatures going about their business.
