Situated in the northern reaches of Botswana within the Linyanti Concession, this historic camp lies to the west of the Chobe National Park and overlooks the Kings Pool Lagoon and Linyanti River. While much has changed since King Leopold honeymooned here in the mid-1900s, the unique safari experience that’s fit for royalty remains. This thatch-and-canvas tented camp is well known for regular visits from local elephant herds who love to frolic in the lagoon, while there is a plethora of other wildlife in the diverse surrounding grassland and riverine landscape, from antelope to African wild dog and leopard.
Each beautifully appointed luxurious thatched tent boasts a generous bedroom with a spacious lounge and elevated wooden veranda. A private plunge pool and covered sala, big enough for daytime naps for two, complete the Out of Africa picture – that and the magnificent wilderness views, of course. Wooden four-poster beds with diaphanous mosquito net curtains add a romantic touch, as do the private outside showers for washing off the dust of the day under the stars.
In the camp’s common areas, eco-chic decor details are plentiful, with the easy-on-the-eye palette taking its cue from the surrounds. Reclaimed tree trunks serve as supporting beams, natural stone is used as cladding, soft leather seats encourage guests to linger longer, while a sunken half-moon wooden lounge overlooking the lagoon is the ideal place to kick back, relax and compare wildlife sightings with fellow guests over a G&T or two. In camp raised walkways ensure a light footprint on the magical surrounds and encourage resident elephant and other animals to wander through the camp en route to their favourite waterside spots.
While game drives and in-camp elephant and hippo watching are a certain highlight, there are plenty of ways to while away the days on African time. Guests can welcome the day with sun salutations in the gym area, and there is a menu of massage treatments that can be enjoyed in the privacy of your tent, while campfire dinners ensure you’ll bank many starlit memories of your time at this legendary Botswana camp.
