DumaTau – a small, luxurious tented camp close to the source of the Savute Channel on Osprey Lagoon – is tucked between two elephant corridors, which means it is excellently located for extremely rewarding game viewing on drives along the Savute. Its name means ‘roar of the lion’ – a clue as to what you can expect during a stay in this remote Botswana wilderness.
DumaTau offer access to an excellent combination of habitats, from the Linyanti Swamps to floodplains and mopane woodlands. The camp is raised off the ground to take advantage of its astonishing river views, and has its own private jetty into the Linyanti River, from where you set off for water-based safari activities.
With just 10 tented suites (eight twin and two family tents), the camp is intimate and serene. Each en-suite tent spreads out under a canvas roof, with clear sliding doors and windows that allow for wide-angled views of the riverfront. The communal spaces include a swimming pool situated so very close to the water’s edge you’ll probably want to check for hippos before you dive in. The airy, indoor/outdoor lounge and dining area maximizes its lagoonfront location with magnificent views, while the beautiful firedeck right on the water’s edge is perfect for sundown cocktails or for swapping safari tales late into the night around the bonfire. Dinners served in a magical outdoor setting under the African night skies are a special occasion to remember. Ask about sleeping out on the star bed on a raised platform at the Zibalianja Lagoon for a truly immersive bush experience.
The Linyanti is famous for its high elephant numbers, but also look out for red lechwe, Burchell’s zebra, giraffe, buffalo and warthog. Predator sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog or spotted hyena add even more excitement during morning and evening game drives in open 4×4 LandRover safari vehicles. Night drives with spotlights may reward you with sightings of nocturnal wildlife such as the lesser bushbaby, spring hare, aardwolf, serval, large spotted genet and, if you are extremely lucky, the elusive pangolin. Guided nature walks, birding safaris, water safaris by motorboat or river barge, and catch-and-release fishing all add to the range of activities available at DumaTau.
