An extraordinary private concession, Khwai Private Reserve is a meticulously protected piece of African paradise situated close to Botswana’s famous Moremi Game Reserve. Hordes of game and pristine wilderness promise unparalleled sightings and lifetime experiences.
Probably the most exclusive private concession and reserve in Botswana, Khwai Private Reserve – on the border of the famed Moremi Game Reserve – is blessed with a unique set of distinguishing factors. Firstly, its sheer enormity sets it apart from other southern African safari experiences. The reserve consists of 200 000 hectares of utterly pristine Botswana wildlife areas, including the drier northern region with its waterholes that guarantee extensive lion, elephant and giraffe sightings. The southern stretches of the reserve are teeming with wildlife, beautiful water channels and true, unspoilt Botswana wilderness.
With just a few exclusive lodges and a management plan that controls visitors and vehicle access at any one time within the concession, Khwai promises an experience that will exceed all southern African safari expectations. The eco-tourism and fair-trade mores upheld at Khwai Private Reserve are exemplary, with all proceeds from experiences here channelled into the local community.
Khwai’s exceedingly healthy ecosystem guarantees wildlife sightings of every kind. The birdlife is magnificent. There are hundreds of species to be found, from raptors to waterbirds, including the mighty fish eagle. Game sightings include sizeable herds of elephant, giraffe and buffalo, as well as hippos that frolic in time-worn channels and pools. Experienced safari goers know then that this much wildlife means predators aplenty – expect to witness lion kills, spot leopard (more than 20 call the southern reaches of the reserve home) and bear witness to a number of elusive wild dog packs. The water-based game-viewing element is equally special: depending on the season, you’ll be able to watch hippo families wallow in riverine pools or channels either from safari vehicles or guided mokoros, the hand-carved wooden boats that for centuries have been used to navigate these parts in the rainy season.
Just a handful of lodges can be found within the concession, although Khwai Private Reserve can also be accessed from lodges situated in the Khwai Community Reserve to the east, Vumbura and Duba Plains to the west, Moremi Game Reserve to the south and the comparatively arid regions of Savute to the north. Wonderful wildlife sightings are guaranteed on every game drive in this incredible area, and for photographers Khwai offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience – from dawn until dusk there is no end to the photo ops and animal sightings.
For a true bucket-list experience, book a sky bed – a back-to-nature open-air sleeping experience hosted by Sable Alley lodge. These three-storey wooden structures are situated metres from a busy waterhole and allow intrepid wildlife lovers to sleep under the stars with a soundtrack of the nocturnal toings and froings of wild animals – a lifetime experience to remember.
