The first semi-permanent camp to open inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Tau Pan makes the most of its starkly beautiful, remote and unspoilt surrounds. Situated on the ridge of an ancient sand dune, the camp overlooks the permanent watering hole at the famous Tau Pan, named for the pride of iconic black-maned Kalahari lion that frequent the pan and the camp itself. Days at this haven in the Central Kalahari are filled with game drives in a 4×4 Landcruiser in the company of a guide and tracker team; day trips to well-known Deception Valley or Sunday, Piper and Passarge pans; bush brunches on Tau Pan; and nature walks with San Bushman trackers. Look out for species including the oryx, the desert-adapted springbok, jackal, the rare brown hyena, red-crested Korhaan and herds of wildebeest.
Each of the nine environmentally adapted en-suite tents, including one family tent, is set on a raised deck, affording you spectacular views over the plains. Each has an indoor and outdoor shower, double-basin vanity, flush toilet, open wardrobe, king-sized bed, living area and writing desk.
The open-plan communal camp area – comprising bar, lounge, curio shop and dining area – is under thatch and set around the fireplace, ideally situated for game viewing down to the waterhole. A telescope for guests’ use means that you can make the most of the Kalahari’s crystal-clear night skies that offer excellent stargazing. Eco-sensitive Tau Pan makes of solar-generated power and solar-heated water.
This serene and tranquil desert property provides an ideal contrast with the lush waterways and pools of the Okavango Delta, and is a great way to start or round off any trip to Botswana.
