Mozambique is the ideal African honeymoon or post-safari beach destination. After years of isolation, travellers are rediscovering Mozambique, with its 2500 kilometres of virgin Indian Ocean coastline, its pristine tropical beaches fringed with coconut palms and endless coral reefs. Small upmarket lodges on virtually uninhabited islands, friendly people and a wealth of marine life make this an attractive alternative to the Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Seychelles.
After landing in the regional town of Vilanculos, you will be transferred by air over the turquoise waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago to Benguerra Island and Azura Lodge, Mozambique’s first luxury ‘eco’ boutique retreat. It can be hard to drag yourself away from your luxurious hand-built villa but it’s worth the effort as there is so much to do here. A kaleidoscope of colour greets you above and below the ocean. Diving and snorkelling enthusiasts will enjoy the magnificent reefs, home to the turtles that nest on the island’s outer shores.
Migrating whales, dolphins, and the elusive and protected dugong (manatee) ply these waters, along with marlin, sailfish and tuna to tempt the sports enthusiast. On land, towering sand dunes give way to indigenous bush abundant with local flora and fauna, an interesting variety of birdlife, as well as the odd crocodile or two at the lakes. The island’s local people make for fascinating cultural encounters, and the starry night sky is magnificent to behold.
